Araujo
Tried an awesome Yankee wine tonight - 2006 Araujo Eisele vineyard sauvignon blanc, immediately interesting on opening but a bit closed - was splendid 2 hrs after decanting warm citrus and light floral notes - which is probably the touch of viognier in there - with intense graphite minerality lovely balance and acidity and perfectly integrated oak - tasted blind would have definately have said very fine Loire, same funky savoury style - almost Dageneau level if lacking a bit in the power and length - too young but very bleedin good - be very interested to see older vintages - and well worth trying to find as a hell of a lot cheaper than their reds

It's also interesting that they produce excellent Sav Blanc and supposedly outstanding Cab Sav from the same vineyard site, especially one in California. Never tried either, the CS is obscenely expensive sadly, like most good Cali cabs
ReplyDeleteTis very true oh great sage of the lakes the Yanks are not renowned for their respect for terroir which is why they have such a reputation for overworked wines which lack definition - case in point tried the 2004 Sin Qua Non Covert Fingers Pinot Noir - Parker pointed monster super concentrated jammy 15.5% expensive nightmare - I mean what do you even do to get Pinot to look like this, it had great length which is shame cause it tasted fucking awful - try to find the Araujo Sav though cool wine
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that hideous-sounding pinot, SQN are well known for their giant, fat, hugely-extcacted Parker-esque Syrahs, and if they apply the same philosophy to Pinot, it sounds like a disaster-in-waiting.. I looked up the Araujo Sav Blanc, it's not bloody cheap either! It's not actually available any more, but I found a bottle at auction for $60! for a bloody Sav Blanc! Pretty sure I won't be buying that now.. Would much rather buy French.. In anycase, as a wise man once said, there's always another wine, or another vintage. Actually I said that, and as I said before, I am a sage.
